What is EC2 instance?

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) in the Amazon Web Services Cloud provides scalable computing power. Because there is no need to make an upfront hardware investment when using Amazon EC2, you can develop and deploy apps more quickly.

Amazon EC2 is hosted in a number of locations around the world. Regions, Availability Zones, Local Zones, AWS Outposts, and Wavelength Zones make up these locations. Each Region is a distinct geographical area.

Within each Region, there are multiple, isolated Availability Zones.

Local Zones enable you to place resources like compute and storage in multiple locations closer to your end users.

AWS Outposts extends native AWS services, infrastructure, and operating models to almost any data center, co-location facility, or on-premises facility.

Wavelength Zones enable developers to create applications with ultra-low latencies for 5G devices and end users. Wavelength brings standard AWS compute and storage services to the 5G networks of telecommunication carriers.

AWS operates cutting-edge, highly available data centers. Failures that affect the availability of instances in the same location, while rare, can occur. If you host all of your instances in a single location that fails, none of your instances will be accessible.

AWS Cloud computing resources are housed in high-availability data centers. These data center facilities are located in different physical locations to provide additional scalability and reliability. These locations are classified according to regions and availability zones.

AWS Regions are large and widely dispersed geographically. Availability Zones are distinct areas within an AWS Region that are designed to be immune to failures in other Availability Zones. They provide low-cost, low-latency network connectivity to Availability Zones in the same AWS Region.

What are AWS Regions?

AWS Regions are distinct geographic areas where AWS's infrastructure is housed. These are distributed globally so that customers can choose the region closest to them to host their cloud infrastructure. The closer your region is to you, the better, so you can reduce network latency for your end users as much as possible. You want to be close to the data centers for quick service.

Best practices for choosing AWS Regions

In general, when selecting a region, try to follow these best practices to help ensure top performance and resilience:

    • Proximity:

To optimize network latency, choose a region that is close to your location and the location of your customers.

    • Services:

Consider what services are most important to you. Typically, new services begin in a few major regions before spreading to others.

    • Cost:

Certain regions will be more expensive than others, so use the built-in AWS calculators to get rough cost estimates to help you make decisions.

    • SLA (Service Level Agreement):

 Your SLA details, like cost, will vary by region, so be aware of what your needs are and whether they are being met.

    • Compliance:

You may need to meet regulatory compliance requirements, such as GDPR, by hosting your deployment in one or more regions.

What are AWS Availability Zones?

An AWS Availability Zone (AZ) is the logical component of an AWS Region. There are currently 69 AZs, which are isolated locations within a region that serve as data centers. Each region has multiple AZs, and designing your infrastructure to have backups of data in other AZs results in a very efficient model of resiliency, which is a core concept of cloud computing.

AWS Availability Zones Suggestions

There are several reasons why a good AZ strategy is useful in a variety of situations. To name a few common use cases, if you distribute your instances across multiple Availability Zones and one instance fails, you can design your application so that another instance in another Availability Zone can handle requests. This is similar to an emergency load balancer but without the use of an actual load balancer.

In general, AWS Availability Zones enable you to launch production apps and resources that are highly available, resilient/fault-tolerant, and scalable when compared to using a single data center. Having more options and backups is preferable!
